There's an OWL in the SHOWER

Here is the first chapter book the students and I are reading through. Below is a summary of the book.
Borden's father, Leon, was a logger in the old-growth forests of California. That is, until the spotted-owl lovers interfered. One day, frustrated by his father's unemployment, Borden sets out on a mission of revenge against the spotted owl but returns home with a half-starved owlet instead. The family soon discovers that the owlet, whom Borden names Bardy, loves to take showers and watch late-night TV. Only after the whole family has fallen in love with Bardy do they realize that the conflict between nature and human industry is not so easily resolved.

My House & Back To School
The view out the window...
I'm really starting to get into back-to-school-mode and anticipating another aweseome year at Lack Tuscarora! We have some exciting projects planned, and I hope you are ready to work super hard! I ran into Josie today at the O.I.P., which was a great surprise! I miss everyone and hope you are having a fun summer! If the weather is good and I can get my out-of-shape body on my bike, I might ride up to East Waterford sometime this weekend and see who I can find.
take care,
Mr. Sanderson

NEW FISH DISCOVERED
While diving in the harbor of a small island in Indonesia recently, husband and wife Buck and Fitrie Randolph, with dive guide Toby Fadirsyair, found a strange fish and took some pictures. The divers could not find the fish in any reference books, so they consulted an expert. The leglike pectoral fin for walking is the clue that this newly found fish is an anglerfish, even though it does not have a lure on its head for attracting prey. Its flat face and forward-looking eyes are just two of a host of reasons why University of Washington professor Ted Pietsch thinks the fish found in January probably represents a new family of vertebrate animals. Just when you think humans have discovered everything on this earth, Mother Nature still holds some amazing secrets.
