Shaver's Creek Field Trip

April 21st we headed to Shaver's Creek for our field trip. We all had a great time and learned some pretty cool nature facts as well. However, I think the kids impressed the presenters with how much they already knew about birds of prey!

Juniata River Bald Eagle

When I don't see a bald eagle at Lack Tuscarora, I look to the next best place which is the Juniata River. Everyday when I cross the Millerstown bridge I scan up and down the river for eagles. Today I got lucky and spotted one just south of the bridge and was able to snap a few pics. This eagle was being constantly dive bombed by about a half dozen crows!

NEW FISH DISCOVERED

While diving in the harbor of a small island in Indonesia recently, husband and wife Buck and Fitrie Randolph, with dive guide Toby Fadirsyair, found a strange fish and took some pictures. The divers could not find the fish in any reference books, so they consulted an expert. The leglike pectoral fin for walking is the clue that this newly found fish is an anglerfish, even though it does not have a lure on its head for attracting prey. Its flat face and forward-looking eyes are just two of a host of reasons why University of Washington professor Ted Pietsch thinks the fish found in January probably represents a new family of vertebrate animals. Just when you think humans have discovered everything on this earth, Mother Nature still holds some amazing secrets.
